Holmes, Kline, Reilly and Dano in The Extra Man

Variety announced that Katie Holmes, Kevin Kline, John C. Reilly and Paul Dano have all signed on to star in “The Extra Man” based on a novel of the same name by Jonathan Ames.

The independent comedy is about a failed playwright (Kline), who makes a living as a male escort for rich, lonely widows while developing a relationship with a troubled aspiring playwright (Dano).

No word on what roles Reilly and Holmes will play. The film will be directed by Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini with Anthony Bregman and Stephanie Davis producing.

“This is a film for our times, these hilarious characters living on the edge of enormous wealth, scrapping for small pieces of the pie,” Bregman said. “I suspect a lot of people will be able to identify nowadays.”

Production begins in February in New York.
