Monsters vs. Aliens Lands on Top

Monday, 30 Mar 2009

Jacksonville – Paramount and DreamWorks Animation’s new release “Monsters vs. Aliens” took the top spot at the box office with the biggest opening of the year.

The 3D animated film grossed $58.2 million and features the star studded voice cast of Reese Witherspoon, Seth Rogen, Rainn Wilson, Paul Rudd, Stephen Colbert, Hugh Laurie, Renee Zellwegger, Kiefer Sutherland and Amy Poehler.

The PG-13 rated horror flick “The Haunting in Connecticut”, also new out this week, took the second spot with $23 million.

Often a total that high would bring in a first place victory but with Monsters vs. Aliens being released in 2D and 3D, it was impossible to beat.

Dropping to third from its first place finish last week was Nicolas Cage’s “Knowing”. The sci-fi action film brought in another $14.7 million to bring its 10-day total to $46.2 million.

“I Love You Man”, the comedy from DreamWorks starring Paul Rudd, took the fourth spot with $12.6 million in its second week.

Finally, rounding out the top five with $7.6 million was the romantic drama “Duplicity” starring Julia Roberts and Clive Owen.

1. Monsters Vs. Aliens    $59.3 M
2. The Haunting in Connecticut    $23.0 M
3. Knowing    $14.7 M
4. I Love You, Man    $12.7 M
