Star Trek Beams Into Top Spot
Los Angeles – J.J Abrams’ reboot of “Star Trek, starring Eric Bana, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg and Chris Pine, took the top spot in its debut at the box office this weekend.
The sci-fi movie brought in $72.5 million which was better than Paramount expected. The execs said they would be happy with anything over $50 million.
The Hugh Jackman starrer “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” dropped from the top spot last week into second this week adding another $27 million to its 10-day total of $129.6 million.
Chris Oronson of 20th Century said about “Wolverine” “We think we withstood the attack of ‘Star Trek,’ if you will, and will settle into a long, successful run.”
Taking the third spot this weekend with $10.5 million was the romantic comedy starring Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Garner called “Ghosts of Girlfriends Past”.
Rounding out the top five with $6.6 million and $4.4 million were “Obsessed” starring Beyonce Knowles and “17 Again” starring Zac Efron and Matthew Perry.
