ESPN’s Steve Phillips Fired, Brooke Hundley Confides On Myspace: Photo

Monday, 26 Oct 2009

Less than a week after his affair with a 22 year old production assistant was made public by a report in the New York Pos, ESPN baseball analyst Steve Phillips was fired by the network.

ESPN granted Phillips a leave of absence last week after details of the affair were made public. However, in the face of mounting criticism, scorn and satire, particularly humiliating for the network just months after the Erin Andrews secret video scandal, ESPN had no choice but to make the separation permanent.

Making matters even worse for Phillips, who was forced into a leave of absence while general manager of the New York Mets following an allegation of sexual harassment and numerous affairs, was a letter that the production assistant wrote to Phillips’ wife, Marni. The letter from Brooke Hundley was part of a police report that many tabloids and bloggers used to further scandalize both Phillips and ESPN. The letter included intimate details of the affair, including specific locations of birthmarks on Phillips’ body.

The firing comes at a time when Phillips, 46, had seemingly turned his career around following his 2003 firing by the Mets. After serving the previous five years as a studio analyst, Phillips had been promoted this year to color analyst on “Sunday Night Baseball” with Jon Miller and Joe Morgan.

Hundley posted on her MySpace page to say she was still “hopeful.â€

Phillips will now voluntarily enter inpatient treatment for personal issues, according to a spokesman representing him.
