James Cameron’s Avatar Equals Emotion Picture
It appears that for some movie goers the multi-billion dollar movie ‘Avatar’ is giving them more than they bargained for. According to more than 1000 posters on the movie’s official website forum, fans are having trouble coping with the fact that its all just fiction. Viewing the movie has left them, emotionally distressed causing deep depression and for some, even suicidal thoughts. Fans on the forum have even given the depression a name, ‘the Pandora Effect’.
As one poster put it “I sat in the theater after it was over just stunned, and then I began to cry. I was ripped apart with feelings I had never had before, hate for myself and my species, hate for my capitalistic and worthless society, and a feeling of such despair that I would never be able to know the Na’vi or their superior culture and way of life.”
The movie, which was filmed in 3D, centers around a paraplegic ex-marine, Jake Sully who is sent on a mission to the distant planet Pandora. His orders are to help corporate miners extract a rare mineral that could be the key to the earth’s energy crisis. With his new and fully functional avatar body, Jake becomes trapped in a battle of morals. Does he continue with his assignment which could ultimately destroy Pandora or help the Utopian planets Na’vi people who he has come to know and love?
‘Avatar’ has received rave reviews by Hollywood’s toughest critics especially for its unprecedented technological wonders and compelling special effects. But for some the imaginary world created by Cameron is just too good not to be true.
