The newest drinking craze: Vodka eyeballing

Wednesday, 02 Jun 2010

Today’s youth has found a new way to get high. It seems that they feel it is more fun and effective to pour vodka into their eyeballs rather than to drink it straight.

The newest trend, called vodka eyeballing, is accomplished by pouring straight vodka directly into the eye. This allows youngsters to become drunk faster by allowing the alcohol to get into the bloodstream through the veins at the back of the eyeball. Experts say that this trend is especially disturbing because not only is it dangerous, it can have lasting damage on the eye such as worsened vision or scarring.

The trend can be seen in various YouTube videos across the Internet. One such clip involves a man named Carlo who demonstrates how the process is done. During the taping, he says, “That is excruciating, my eye burns to hell.”

The American Academy of Ophthalmology released the following statement:

“People need to be aware that anyone who pours vodka directly into his eye risks damaging the surface epithelial cells..often causing pain and infection.” They went on to state, “Eyeballers do not get a ‘quick high’ as claimed because the volume of vodka absorbed by the conjunctiva and cornea is too small to have that effect.”

The trend has been mainly seen in younger generations. It is said to have originated in Las Vegas when waitresses poured vodka into clients eyes in order to gain larger tips. The craze has since expanded across America and has become popular in parts of Europe as well. vodka-eyeballing-new-drinking-game
