Miami Beach Man Misdiagnosed With Dengue Fever

Friday, 16 Jul 2010

Officials at a Miami-Dade County health agency admitted that they made a mistake about a Dade County resident who they suspected of having Dengue Fever.

A test report from a Tampa state lab reported that test results from the man were negative for Dengue Fever, which is mosquito borne, although the man who was suspected of having it had all the classic symptoms.

The health director for the agency reported that her colleagues did suspect that the man had acquired the illness with the symptoms appearing to be the same exact symptoms of Dengue Fever.

The director warned the public instead of waiting for the test results that take 2 days. Although Dengue Fever is a very difficult illness to diagnose, the Miami Beach man had all the characteristic signs and symptoms that the illness causes.

The man was reported to become ill earlier this month with symptoms of abdominal pain, high fever, nausea and diarrhea, severe pain behind eyes and severe aches. These symptoms suggested to health officials that the man had the more severe form of Dengue Fever that causes hemorrhages.

The director stated that she had no regrets for alerting citizens since this illness has been reported to have affected 27 people in Key West last year. dengue-fever-update
