New Goverment Study on Prescription Drug Abuse

The release of a new study by the federal government shows that the abuse from prescription drugs has skyrocketed over the over the past decade. It indicates that the amount of people admitted to treatment centers and outpatient programs has increased by over 400% from 1998 to 2008.

The study takes into consideration people from all walks of life. It included people of all genders, race, education and origin over the age of twelve. The study was made public this week by the director of the White House Office of Drug Control, Gil Kerlikowske. He made a statement upon the release of the study stating that prescription drug abuse is now the second most common from of drug abuse in the United States.

Once a year, the federal government releases a report called the National Survey on Drug Use and Health. The report is an estimator of the number of drug abusers in the United States. It also reports on what types of prescription drugs are most commonly abused. It is considered to be the most important document on ways to combat the war on drugs in America.
