VA Issues New Policy Regarding the Use of Marijuana

Monday, 26 Jul 2010

A policy which veterans have sought for a number of years is finally coming into play by The Department of Veterans Affairs: it will allow patients treated at its hospitals and clinics to use medical marijuana in those states where it is legal.

It is expected that the new policy will take effect within a week. This will resolve the conflict in veterans facilities between federal law, outlawing marijuana, and the states, 14 in all, that allow the drug to be used for medicinal purposes.

Still, the policy will not allow department doctors to prescribe the drug. It will, however, address the concern that many patients express which is to be able to use the drug without losing access to the prescription pain medication if they are discovered using marijuana. Under the present policy veterans can be denied pain medications if they are caught using illegal drugs. Marijuana, until now, was not considered an exception to this policy. The former policy caused a number of patients to distrust their doctors.

According to Dr. Robert Jess, the principal deputy under secretary for health in the veteran’s department, “When states start legalizing marijuana we are put in a bit of a unique position because as a federal agency, we are beholden to federal law.” va-new-policy-marijuana

  1. It’s really good to see that the VA is allowing our injured heroes this option. There are _MANY_ reports of injured vets and other Americans being able to reduce their use of narcotic pain killers and other dangerous drugs simply by using the natural remedy, marijuana. Thank you, VA, and a job well done!
