Head Lice Infestation Management in School Children May Require a Different Approach

Wednesday, 28 Jul 2010

The American Academy of Pediatrics recently released information that served to increase the debate on lice treatment in school children.

This flies in the face of previously perceived advances in the fight against these pesky pests that are the scourge of many a school child and their parents. According to the AAP, previous treatments that were commonly used to combat these pests may just as well be causing resistance in the pests. These are usually insecticides such as Rid, Nix and Cetaphil; all treatments that have been used with somewhat admissible success so far.
However, the AAP suggest that with the evolution of the lice bug and its increased resistance, parents should embrace a wider range of methods of combating the pest, in addition to the use of topical insecticides.

With an estimated six to twelve million head lice infestation cases reported in the US every year, the fight against head lice shows no signs of abating. Nevertheless, Deborah Altschuler, president of the National Pediculosis Association contends that head lice are part of raising children. She further postulates that in the same way oral hygiene has been embraced and is taught to the young ones, so should lice management and eradication. head-lice-new-guidelines
