Calcium Supplements Raises Risk of Heart Attack
Many people, and especially women, who take calcium supplements, may actually increase their chances for having a heart attack. A new report released from the University of Auckland, New Zealand, has shown that people taking calcium where at an increased risk of heart attacks than those who did not take the supplement.
Researchers performed several clinical trials that included over 12,000 people. The results kept coming back the same; those who took the supplement for osteoporosis prevention had a higher risk off heart attack.
They believe it is time to revaluate the usage of calcium as a supplement. Doctors at the University claim that the risk is there and should be addressed. They believe that the increase of calcium in the blood stream leads to increased chance of artery disease.
Many doctors are interested in the study, but not convinced of the risk. Calcium supplements have long been a great source of help to people, and especially women, fight the ravages of time on bone density. Taking a calcium supplement helps keep bones strong and prevents age-related fractures.
More studies will need to be conducted. Until then, doctors from both sides of the issue recommend that you only take a calcium supplement if you do not intake enough calcium in your regular diet.
