Wireless Blood Glucose Monitor: A Breakthrough in the Fight Against Diabetes
The University of California has teamed up with GlySens Incorporated to bring a new wave of technology to those living with diabetes. A sensor has been created and tested that will give a constant stream accurate readings of the glucose level in the blood. This device is meant to be implanted into the patient and the information is relayed to an external monitor and relays the blood glucose level at all times.
This is an amazing breakthrough for those with diabetes. It will help patients maintain better control over their blood glucose levels and better adjust their diet and exercise regimes. The usual diabetes patient uses the blood test strips where you prick your finger to determine your blood glucose level. This is only done a few times a day and as such only offers a small window of data to use for making decisions about diet and exercise.
By using an implant the patient will no longer have to prick their finger several times a day. They will also have a constant stream of information on their blood glucose level to help them make more informed decisions. Diabetes is currently the seventh leading cause of death in the United States and perhaps with this new wave of medical technology some patients will be saved.
