Nadja Benaissa Could See a Ten Year Prison Sentence for Infecting People With HIV

Monday, 16 Aug 2010

Nadja Benaissa, who is the former singer in the girl band No Angels, is being charged with one count of dangerous bodily harm and four counts of attempted dangerous bodily harm that date back to the period between 2000 and 2004.

Benaissa, 28, said that “I am sorry with all my heart.” Benaissa went on to say she was “careless during those days” and admitted she did not tell her sex partners about her condition.

If Benaissa is found guilty, she could see a prison sentence ranging from six months to 10 years.

Benaissa was apprehended in April 2009 and held in jail for 10 days, a move that a German AIDS awareness group criticized as disproportionate.

A man who is HIV positive, who’s identity has not been released, is a co-claimant, saying that it was Benaissa who infected him.

Benaissa is the daughter of a Moroccan father and Roma mother. No Angels became among Germany’s most succesful acts, selling five million albums after they won the reality show Popstars in 2000. The three members went their separate ways in 2003, before reforming in 2006. Benaissa was arrested in 2009 before a concert in Frankfurt. nadja-benaissa-prison-sentence-infecting-hiv
