Today Is Columbus Day
October 11th, 2010 is the Columbus Day observance throughout the United States.
This is the day set aside to honor Christopher Columbus, the Spanish explorer who back in 1492 was noted as the first explorer to come ashore in what now is the United States.
Columbus Day is also a day in which all the federal offices, banks, and post offices are closed throughout the country. Columbus Day is always held on the second Monday in October.
Interestingly though, Columbus Day is not a public holiday in three states. Those three states are California, Hawaii, and Nevada. All public services will be open in those states today.
