Adam Levine Tears Into 'American Idol' Over Attitude Toward Gay Contestants
“C’mon. You can’t be publicly gay? At this point? On a singing competition? Give me a break,” Levine said.
Former ‘Idol’ contestant Adam Levine has went on record to say that Fox executives had urged him to keep his sexual identity under wraps while he was doing work with and for the show. Lambert was reluctant at first, but finally agreed, noting that it was difficult to be open even if he had wanted to be, due Fox’s interview policy for current ‘Idol’ participants. The policy does not allow for contestants of the running season to be interviewed separately.
Levine has had his own sexuality questioned in recent months, but the singer, who’s openly states that his brother is gay, pointed out that numerous men in rock-n-roll that have made it big have had their sexuality questioned.
“I wouldn’t be the front man of a band if that question hadn’t come up at some point,” Levine said. ““What’s always pissed me off about American Idol is wanting to mask that, for that to go unspoken.”
A more in-depth interview will be featured in the September issue of Out magazine.
