Insights into Johnny Depp’s Tat of
International acting superstar Johnny Depp, perhaps best known for his role as Captain Jack Sparrow Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, is also known for his tattoos, his most famous being “Winona Forever,” which he had inscribed on his right arm during his engagement to Ms. Ryder decades ago.
He wryly altered it to “Wino Forever” after their engagement fell through. However, it’s the tattoo on his left arm that has garnered some attention recently with the three words, “Silence, Exile, Cunning.”
While they are perhaps odd words of rebellion and darkness, it turns out they are a literal quote from the book “A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man” by Irish poet and author James Joyce.
The book, originally published in 1916, recalls the life of a character named Stephen Dedalus, who some claim was really an alter-ego of Joyce. Johnny Depp is well-read and has found deep meaning in the quote by Dedalus. Depp is truly an artist at heart.
