Chinese Government Bans 2D Avatar
Mega sci-fi film Avatar has been restricted in China. The Chinese government will ban the 2-D version of the movie beginning January 22, 2010. The move has created an uproar among the Chinese moviegoers.
The movie has been setting box office records around the world. There are several rumors floating around about why the government has restricted the film, but nothing official. They have stated the 3-D version, which tickets cost significantly more, will still be played in select theaters.
Some are saying the government is uncomfortable with the plot of the film and is worried it may give their citizens some bad ideas. The Na’vi in the film are forced out of their homes in a greed fueled decision by their world leaders, which mirrors a similar situation happening in China. Homeowners are being evicted from their homes to make room for large corporations.
Another popular conspiracy theory is China is making room for their own homegrown films. The Chinese government is very restrictive on what foreign movies are allowed in their cinemas and this film has already become the highest grossing film of all time in China. The 2-D versions are being replaced with a Chinese film about the great leader Confucius.
