Paranormal Activity Scares Box Office Competition

Five weeks since its release “Paranormal Activity” finally reached the top spot at the box office this weekend.

With the addition of another thousand screens the supernatural thriller grossed $22 million for a total of $62.5 million earned since it opened which has exceeded all expectations for a movie produced for a mere $15,000.

Newly released this weekend was the next instalment in the “Saw” franchise.

“Saw VI” managed to scare up $14.8 million for a second place finish.

Spike Jonze’s adaptation of Maurice Sendak’s children’s book “Where the Wild Things Are” took the third spot this weekend coming in just behind “Saw VI” with $14.4 million. Earning $12.7 million this weekend to finish in fourth was the Jamie Foxx and Gerard Butler thriller “Law Abiding Citizen”.

Rounding out the top five with $11 million was “Couple’s Retreat” starring Vince Vaughn, Jason Bateman, Jon Favreau, Malin Akerman, Kristin Davis and Kristen Bell.
