James Mitchell, Soap Opera Star Passes Away At 89

James Mitchell, 30 year veteran of the daytime drama All My Children died Friday at Cedars-Sainai center in Los Angeles. He had suffered from chronic pulmonary disease for several years, and had been admitted to the hospital for pneumonia, before finally succumbing due to complications last week.

He was most well known for his roll in the daytime drama as Palmer Courtland, but had appeared in several movies and performed in the leading role with the American Ballet Theater. Mr. Mitchell also performed with touring companies in The three Penny Opera, Funny Girl, and the King And I. He has been nominated seven times for Daytime Emmy Awards, and loved playing the villain in any performance. His final performance, on All My Children, was for the fortieth anniversary episode earlier this month.

He is survived by longtime partner, Albert Wolsky, who made the announcement Sunday. On the show’s website describes James as a self made millionaire, with high regards to family values. Saying also that while he was “gruff” on the exterior, his love for his family “runs to the core.”

Mr, Mitchell had been awarded honorary doctorates from Yale University and Drake University and had taught movement for actors.
